That is the short answer. The longer one is about how a Frenchie actually sleeps.
Poppi is the French bulldog in our photographs. She weighs 24 pounds and sleeps on a 02 kaya in mocha. In the pictures she is doing the two things Frenchies do: curled into a loose ball at one end of the bed, and later flat on her side with her legs out, using the whole length. On a smaller bed the second position would hang off the edge. On kaya it doesn't, and there is room left over, which is what you want. A dog that has to arrange itself to fit a bed will often choose the floor instead.
Most breeds sit clearly inside one size. French bulldogs sit on the line between our two smallest, and the breed runs heavier than it looks: a stocky 26-pound dog is normal and healthy. Two rules settle it.
Weigh the dog, don't guess. Bathroom scale, with and without the dog. If the number is 22 or above, kaya. If it is under 22 and the dog is full grown, ono.
When in doubt, go up. A bed that is a little big costs nothing in comfort. A bed that is a little small gets ignored.
If you want to check the weight rule against the dog in front of you: wait until the dog is stretched out asleep, then measure from the nose to the base of the tail. Add about six inches. That is the length the bed should offer along its longer side. For most Frenchies the number lands between 28 and 34 inches, which is why kaya, at 42 inches long, leaves the room it should.
A French bulldog puppy under 22 pounds will grow into kaya within a few months. Buy kaya and let the puppy look small on it for a while; it is better than buying twice.
