Before you order: size, color, layers, washing

A bed is a piece of furniture you're buying for someone who can't tell you whether it fits. Everything worth settling first is here: the size, the color, the three layers, how it washes, how it ships, and what arrives in the box.

One thing to know up front: a complete bed is final sale, so it can't be returned once it's on its way. That's why we put the help in front of the order instead. Free fabric samples, a size guide with the real footprints on it, and a person on the other end of an email who's glad to help you choose. Use all three.

Start with the size

There are four, and they go by weight.

  • ono · for dogs under 22 lb · 25 × 31 in
  • kaya · for dogs 22 to 55 lb · 33 × 42 in
  • nori · for dogs 55 to 100 lb · 41 × 52 in
  • sora · for dogs 100 lb and up · 49 × 62 in

Every size is four inches thick, so your dog never feels the floor through it.

Weight gets you to the right bed most of the time. How your dog sleeps decides the rest. A dog that stretches out, all four legs, needs the next size up. A dog that has always curled up tight will settle into the smaller size in their range. A dog sitting right at the top of a band should go up.

Two minutes on the floor will settle it faster than any chart. Measure your dog lying down the way they usually sleep, nose to the base of the tail, and add four to six inches; that number should sit inside the long dimension above. Then run masking tape around the full footprint, in the place the bed is going to live. That's how you find out that a sora doesn't fit beside the sofa.

Then the color

Six colorways: oat, flint, chai, moss, mocha and dune.

A color on a screen isn't the color in your room, and we're not going to pretend otherwise. We'll send you the real cloth, free, the same 520 g/m² performance linen weave the covers are cut from, so you can watch it take the light where the bed is going to sit.

A bed a shade lighter or darker than your dog keeps hair from showing between brushings: oat and dune with cream and light coats, chai and dune with tan, golden and red ones, and flint, mocha and moss with gray, black, brindle and darker coats.

And if you want the color to stay exactly as it arrived, keep the bed out of a south-facing window. Like any upholstery fabric it'll soften in direct sun over time. In normal room light it holds.

Understand the three layers

The stone nest is three parts, and knowing which is which answers most of the questions that come later.

  • The core is high-resilience orthopedic foam, cut from block foam and made in Poland, with its rounded edge built up by hand. No chips and no shredded fill. It's the part that does the supporting. High resilience is a grade rather than a description: it's the kind of foam made for mattresses and upholstered furniture, so it springs back instead of sinking, it keeps its shape, and air moves through it so it doesn't take on body heat the way memory foam does. The foam is in its natural color, anywhere from white to light yellow.
  • The liner is a waterproof fitted sheet that goes over the foam. No zipper; it pulls on like a fitted sheet on a mattress. It's there so that anything that gets through the cover stops at the liner and never reaches the foam.
  • The cover is the part you see: a performance linen weave on the top and sides, a suede-like anti-slip base underneath, and a zipper running around the full perimeter of the base. It comes off and it washes.

Think of the core as a mattress and the cover as the sheets: you wash the sheets and keep the mattress. That's why covers and liners can both be bought again on their own, and why a worn cover means a new cover rather than a new bed.

Washing, before you need to

Both textiles are made to be washed, and they wash the same way: machine cold, no bleach, no fabric softener, then line dry or lay them flat. Zip the cover closed before it goes in. Don't put them in the dryer. Everything must be completely dry before it goes back on the foam.

The foam doesn't wash. Ever. If it gets wet, get it dry in the first hour; that's the one part of owning this bed that's truly urgent.

Getting the cover back on is layer by layer, on the floor: lay the cover flat and unzipped, set the foam on top with the indent of the foam lined up with the indent of the cover, pull the edges up all around, and zip it closed. Two minutes, once you've done it.

Shipping, and what arrives

Shipping is free in the contiguous US on orders of $200 and up, which is every bed; smaller orders ship for a flat $10. Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico ship at the rate you see at checkout. Outside the US we ship on a case-by-case basis: email us with where you are and we'll quote shipping and duties.

Orders usually leave within a couple of days and transit is two to five. We roll and pack every bed ourselves, in Tennessee, on the day it ships, so the foam spends as little time rolled as possible.

Inside the box, the foam and the liner are rolled together in a plastic sleeve, and the cover is folded on top of the roll. Unroll it right away. Take the roll out of the sleeve, lay it flat, and leave it alone. It opens up as soon as it's out of the sleeve and settles into its full shape over 24 to 48 hours. A faint new-material smell in the first day or two is the foam airing, and it clears in a ventilated room.

Don't leave it rolled. There's nothing to gain by waiting and the foam is the part you can't replace.

Returns

Covers, liners and pillow covers can be returned within 30 days of delivery, unused, unwashed and in their original packaging, for an exchange or a refund. Start the return from your order; once it's approved, we email you a prepaid return label. Return shipping is a flat $20, taken off your refund, and the original shipping charge isn't refunded. Orders can't be cancelled once placed.

If something arrives damaged or wrong, email us within 14 days with photos of the item and of the box it came in, and keep everything until you've heard from us. Damaged and wrong items are replaced. Every cover and liner, whether it came with a bed or was bought on its own, carries a 12-month limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship, like a seam that comes apart or a zipper that stops working. Send photos and your order number, and if it's a defect, we'll repair or replace it.
