The
Shape
To your room it's a stone: one smooth form that sits quietly with your furniture. To your dog it's a nest, a place of their own.
Most dog beds are one or the other. The ones that look like furniture aren't very comfortable, and the comfortable ones aren't much to look at. We wanted both.
It starts with the turn
A dog circles before lying down. It's an old nesting habit: turn a few times, then settle into a loose curl. That curl is the shape we started from.
It isn't a circle and it isn't a rectangle, so the bed isn't either. The outline is rounded and a little uneven, the way a curled-up dog is. From across the room it looks like a smooth river stone, and it's why the bed looks like something that belongs in your room. It's also where the name comes from: the stone nest.
Why it's uneven
Your dog does two different things on a bed. They curl, nose to tail, taking up as little room as they can. And they stretch, all four legs out, taking up as much as they can.
A rectangle makes you pick a size for one of those and live with it for the other. An uneven shape doesn't: there's room to curl and room to stretch, and your dog decides which without being told.
Why it's low
Low, with no raised sides. A bolstered bed has raised sides, and raised sides are something your dog has to climb over, which gets harder with every year of a dog's life.
Low means your dog steps on rather than in. It means an older dog isn't negotiating an edge at two in the morning. And it means the bed sits below the sight line of everything else in the room, so a dog lying down can still see you, and you can still see the dog.

The stone and the nest
The two words also describe how it's built. The stone is the foam core, which gives the bed its shape and stays for good. The nest is the soft part your dog lies on, the liner and the cover, which come off, wash, and can be replaced on their own.
Think of the core as a mattress and the cover as the sheets: you wash the sheets and keep the mattress.
The shape is ours; a design patent is pending.
